First, Schumer has managed to get his gun ban on the Senate calendar separately. It can be killed if the leadership chooses not to bring it to a vote or it can be killed by a filibuster. We should apply pressure to prevent it from coming to a vote. If that fails, we must push for a filibuster. We should pressure any Senator who voted for the Feinstein amendment last time. Does anybody have the voting record from that vote? We need to start calling immediately. Second, the two versions of the crime bill must be reconciled in commitee. Orrin Hatch's aide told me that the members had not been selected yet but should be in a week or so. Once they are chosen we need to call each one of them and urge them to kill the gun ban or strip it out of the crime bill. Third, there will be a vote (probably in both houses) on the reconciled version of the crime bill. The pro-gunners will not be the only people to oppose the crime bill. There are death penalty provisions and other things that many people are opposed to. I suggest we all find out what is in this beast and pick some non-gun provisions to oppose. Then make somes calls opposing the gun ban on these issues also and urge like- minded friends to do the same. This increases the probability that the crime bill can be successfully filibustered. Fourth, do what you can to inform your complacent pro-gun friends that it isn't just AK-47 copies that are being banned, but ordinary handguns like Rugers, Berretas and Brownings are being affected too. Tell them they've been lied to by everyone up to and including the President. Let them know that the media is already working on us to oppose "Saturday Night Specials". For those of you who watched Day One, what you were witnessing was the ultimate bait-and-switch ("Oh, now that Assault Weapons are banned, what you REALLY need to ban is cheap handguns"). And then, of course, all handguns. That is the master strategy of the gun grabbers. We have to take this opportunity to expose that strategy and mobilize opposition. We have a week or two before work will even begin on reconciling these bills. It will be some time after that before the bill comes out. It would be great if we could get it stalled until after the GOA rallies on July 2. The longer it can be stalled the better. The broader the opposition to the crime bill the better. Keep calling, and don't forget to give praise and contributions to pro-gun legislators. This fight isn't over. This is only round two. Don't quit now. Chuck p.s. Larry Craig's email address is larry_craig@craig-dc.senate.gov I told his aide I was on the net. She said he is interested in hearing from us. Let's all give him a show of support and send him a brief thank-you note from the net. ***********************************************************************
