It is expected that Governor Weicker will continue his push for three different types of "gun control" bills: registration & licensing, ban on possession of firearms under age 21 and repeal of concealed carry. We will keep you updated when the legislature meets. Connecticut: Handgun Control, Inc. issued the following statement by James Brady on June 10, 1994: I want to thank Senators Jepsen and Aniskovich, Representatives Fritz and Rennie, and the other elected officials who are here today. Not much more than a year ago, I was here in this room, urging Connecticut lawmakers to support legislation that would ban military-style assault weapons. I said then that if John Hinckley had had an UZI, I wouldn't be here now. A year ago, Connecticut's lawmakers set a courageous example for their colleagues on Capitol Hill. This victory only happened because the voices of the people were heard -- voices of folks everywhere. And just a month ago, the U.S. House passed a ban on assault weapons that we hope will soon be on the President's desk as part of the Crime Bill. While Hinckley didn't have an UZI, he did have a Saturday Night Special. And let's face it. That was one deranged man who should not have been able to buy a gun. And that is why I have returned to Connecticut. Soon, Governor Weicker will convene a special session to consider comprehensive gun control legislation. He knows that this bill will help to keep guns out of more than criminal hands. This bill will help keep guns out of the hands of young people, the mentally unstable, and those who would misuse a gun in the heat of passion, or the depths of depression. It must be enacted. With gun violence out of control, there is no time for procedural games. I am asking that Connecticut once again set an example for the rest of the country. The time for bowing to the will of the gun lobby is over. It's time once again to listen to the voices of the people of Connecticut and of the country who have said "enough is enough."
