Handgun Control, Inc. (HCI) is a Washington, D.C.-based non-profit organization that lobbies Congress, state legislatures, and local governments to enact sensible new laws to prevent gun violence by keeping guns and ammunition out of the wrong hands. HCI rallied the support of law enforcement leaders, educators, health and legal professionals and other concerned people to pass the Brady Law and the national assault weapons ban. HCI also successfully advocated for new California laws denying minors access to firearms and ammunition. This year, HCI will work toward passing other measures to make our neighborhoods and workplaces safer, including requiring manufacturers to child-proof firearms they produce, and establishing a comprehensive licensing and registration system to make it easier to enforce laws restricting the sale of guns and ammunition. Note: Because we devote 100% of our efforts to pass gun control legislation, contributions to Handgun Control, Inc. are not deductible either as charitable contributions or business expenses. LEGAL COMMUNITY AGAINST VIOLENCE Bay Area law firms and other concerned groups and individuals formed Legal Community Against Violence (LCAF) in the wake of the senseless and brutal shootings that took the lives of eight people at 101 California Street on the afternoon of July 1, 1993. Since that day, LCAV has worked to mobilize the legal community and other concerned citizens to work for gun violence prevention through educational, legal and legislative efforts. LCAV has provided financial support for litigation filed against the manufacturers and sellers of guns and accessories used in the July 1 shooting. Members of LCAV worked with other groups toward the enactment of the Brady Law (requiring prospective gun purchasers to submit to background checks) and a national ban on the manufacture and sale of assault weapons. LCAV also worked at the state level to pass legislation denying access to firearms by minors and people subject to restraining orders in domestic violence cases. This year, LCAV will work with local governments throughout California to show communities how to draft and pass local legislation protecting their neighborhoods against the proliferation of guns and ammunition. LCAV will also continue to support ground-breaking litigation aimed at holding gun manufacturers and dealers responsible for the negligent sale of their deadly products. Moreover, LCAV will fight efforts by the gun lobby to weaken existing gun control legislation.
