Date: Fri, 28 Jul 95 21:55 EST From: Peter Nesbitt <0005111312@mcimail.com> To: Firearms Alert Subject: MEETING: Hawaii Firearms Control Coalition. [Their meetings continue; funding is being pulled; networking and coalition building continue to progress. -- PDN] MEETING NOTICE What: HAWAII FIREARMS CONTROL COALITION When: 12 Noon Wednesday, August 23, 1995 Where: Office of the Attorney General 425 Queen Street 2nd Floor Conference Room HAWAII FIREARMS CONTROL COALITION Wednesday, July 19, 1995 Present: Maria Ching, Deborah Goebert, Nancy Marker, Bill Montgomery, Nadine Onodera, Pauline Osborne, Pegi Scully, Brandon Stone. The meeting began at 12:15 PM; the June 21st minutes were approved. DOH Happenings The Injury Prevention and Control Program, like most DOH programs, is currently having to justify its existence due to budget cuts and the fact that prevention is not considered a core function of the Department of Health. Also, a RIF is being planned for hundreds of DOH employees (the exact number is not known at this time) and this could affect IPCP employees. However, both childhood injury and the sexual assault prevention project were recommended for funding. Surveillance Pilot Project Update The "Firearms Incident Surveillance Trial" handout was distributed. There are still questions regarding how to handle certain situations within this project. Suggestions are welcome. The next phase will be to test it out at the police department. Work Plan Development Education (Pamphlet) A handout was distributed regarding firearms information. The focus will be to summarize current issues of the HFCC. A short, clear document is being created at this time. It was suggested that this document be in a tri-fold brochure style and be mailed out with a catchy message on each envelope. This document will be completed and distributed closer to the next legislative session. Legislation (Insurance) It was announced that there is a meeting tentatively set for August 3, 1995 at Noon in the IPCP conference room. Business Update Fund Status An exemption from the federal income tax was received certifying the Coalition as a non-profit organization with the IRS. The coalition is nonprofit, but not tax deductible due to its lobbying activities. Presently there is approximately $4,000 in the bank account. Announcements Roseanne Anders of Harvard School of Public Health is planning a spring conference on Violence Prevention and would like Nadine to come and speak. Eric Tash called and said that Hawaii could get on California's Violence Prevention Network and he is very excited about this. The Handgun Annual Help Network conference is being held in Washington D.C. from November 12-14. The National Violence Prevention Conference is being held in Des Moines, Iowa from October 22-25. The meeting adjourned at 1:28 P.M. Next Meeting: Wednesday, August 23, 1995 Office of the Attorney General 425 Queen Street 12:00 noon [end]
