CHICAGO, Oct. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- On Oct. 30, "The Oprah Winfrey Show" premieres ChildAlert, a compelling monthly documentary that addresses the challenges facing America's children. The series kicks off with "Oprah's ChildAlert: Children and Guns: Part I." Other shows this season include children and poverty, juvenile justice, and child molestation. The goal of the series is to help viewers identify problems, find practical solutions, and empower them to make changes that positively impact children. (Check local listings.) "For 10 years, I've been doing shows about dysfunction, and what I found is the reason we have the kind of society that we have is related to the way we have been parented," said Winfrey. "The way we stop the dysfunction -- to save our world -- to save our children -- is to help parents understand what is wrong in our homes, our schools, our communities, and do something about it." The campaign consists of two poignant and very moving shows highlighting the devastation that guns are having on our youth. During these two shows, parents, gun owners, medical experts, judges and law enforcement officers take a close look at: -- Why 15 children die every day in America as a result of guns. -- Does a gun in the home make you safer? -- Why 1.2 million children go home after school to a house with a gun, but no parental supervision. -- An investigative report on the availability of guns. -- Kids and guns in school. -- The marketing of guns to women. To further emphasize the gun safety issue, Part I will call for a month-long nationwide voluntary gun turn-in campaign. The show will also initiate a letter-writing campaign asking major gun manufacturers to childproof guns. "The Oprah Winfrey Show" is working with more than 270 police departments who have agreed to be gun drop-off centers in their respective communities. All collected firearms will be destroyed, regardless of their value. Viewers needing more information can call 900-370-1414. The results of the national gun turn-in campaign will be announced on "Children and Guns: Part II," Thursday, Nov. 30. Additionally, beginning in November, Oprah will feature "Parent of the Week," a weekly series that celebrates parents who know how to communicate with children, and are "doing it right." "Parenting is the toughest job in America," said Winfrey. "This season, I want to talk to parents who are raising children who go to school, who aren't drug addicts, who are growing up to be honest people. I want to applaud THOSE parents, and empower the kids and parents who are getting it right," she added. The first parent Winfrey will honor, within the first "Children and Guns" special, is Lynette Robinson. Robinson is the mother of the late Larry Elizalde, an honors student and outstanding athlete who was senselessly murdered on the streets of Chicago. During the show, Oprah pays tribute to this family and puts a face on the millions of children who are dying because of gun violence. "The Oprah Winfrey Show" is the highest-rated talk show in television history and the No. 1 show on daytime TV. It is produced in Chicago by Harpo Productions and syndicated to 207 U.S. markets and 116 international markets by King World. CO: Harpo Productions ST: Illinois IN: ENT SU:
