To: firearms-alert@shell.portal.com Subject: CA: CRPA legislative update 1/16/96 Date: Mon, 22 Jan 1996 09:08:50 PST From: John Walker 1/16/96 Here is the weekly legislative update from the California Rifle and Pistol Assn. (CRPA). This is a transcript from a broadcast made on the "It's not about Guns,. . .It's about Freedom" radio show on KIEV 870 A.M. (Glendale, CA). Broadcasted each Tuesday night from 8:30 P.M. to 10:30 P.M. Typing errors are my own. ***********Beginning of Article******* Good evening, this is Gerald Upholt, Manager of Governmental Affairs for the California Rifle and Pistol Association with a "Legislative Watch" report on activities in the State Capitol. **** Today the Assembly Public Safety Committee killed AB 629 authored by Democratic Assembly member Luis Caldera of Los Angeles. Had it passed, it would have defined a broad array of handguns to be "Saturday Night Specials," and then banned their manufacture, sale and possession in California beginning on January 1, 1997. Basically, any domestically produced handgun that would not meet federal importation criteria if it was produced in a foreigh country would be declared a so called "Saturday Night Special." This would affect many high quality American made handguns. Among Mr. Calera's supporters of AB 629 were several ex-gang members from the Los Angeles and San Francisco bay areas. Upon seeing the bill killed, they began shouting at Public Safety Committee members in a threatening manner. Committee chairperson Paula Boland of Granada Hills, called upon the legislature's sergeant-at-arms to bring the situation back under control. It was apparent that the gang members had been conviced that firearms, not their own illegal actions, were the cause of their problems. ***************End of article******** By the way, The people in the Fullerton, CA office of the CRPA deserve a pat on the back for making this update available for posting on the internet.
