They write: We alerted you on Monday that a compromise may be in the works. Now, both the Republicans and Democrats are sitting down at the table - and gun owners are going to be left out in the cold. The ASSOCIATED PRESS reported yesterday that, "Gingrich said he and other Republicans would work over the next 48 hours 'to reach a general consensus on a bipartisan bill' and predicted final action on it 'before we leave town.'" And what will that bipartisan bill entail? "Among changes being considered are reductions in crime prevention measures - seen as pork by some Republicans - and an increase in law enforcement provisions such as prison construction and police department aid. The measure might also be changed to allow for some administrative review before new restrictions on the sale of 19 models of assault-style weapons would take effect." Folks, they must think we're ignorant on Capitol Hill, because giving the congress "administrative review" is like putting the fox in charge of the hen house. this ain't no compromise. The WASHINGTON POST described "administrative review" as a provision that would "allow Congress to review the government's conclusion on which copycat models would be prohibited under the ban." Whatever this means, you can bet it means your guns will still be banned. Consider also what the Associated Press reported Senator Bob Dole as saying right after our victory last week: "Senate Minority leader Bob Dole Saturday said Clinton should take 'the excessive spending' out of the bill and restore ' some of the tough provisions that were dropped out.' If that were done, ' it would go a long way toward reaching strong bipartisan support,' Dole said on the Senate floor." Did you notice any missing changes? He did not breathe a word about dropping the semi-auto ban! We all need to light up some more phone lines. It's not too late. They are going to be working on a compromise for the next 48 hours. HERE'S WHAT YOU CAN DO: Please call Gingrich. He really needs to hear that American DO NOT want a crime bill. Tell him that you speak for 10, 20, 30, 40 or more friends and family-whatever is truthful- and tell him you guys don't want this unconstitutional crime bill!! The law enforcement issue is a state and local matter, not a federal one. There is no authority in Article I, Section 8 of the Constitution to raise or support 100,000 cops. That is a dangerous and unwise. And we certainly don't need the Congress to decide what guns are to be banned or not. We need to just let this bill die. Nobody believes this bill will put a single dent in crime anyway - tell him that. News reports through Tuesday were saying Clinton was having a difficult time getting the votes to pass the rule on the crime bill. That means we were winning! We don't need Republicans like Gingrich to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory! Gingrich's office is telling people to call their own Reps. Don't let him off the hook! Call Rep Gingrich at 1-202-225-4501/fax 5-4656 . Also call some of the other Republican leaders like Bill McCollum 202-225-2176/fax 5-0999. They need to feel the heat and realize that there is strong opposition to any crime bill that has EVEN A HINT of a gun ban in it. Tell them, "Do not compromise at all. And don't you dare accept a crime bill with a gun ban!" Also call Haley Barbour 202-863-8700/ fax 202-863 8774 head of the Republican National Committee. He's meeting with Gingrich today. Tell them you guys will remember in November if Republicans vote for a compromise gun ban in the crime bill. There are now 24 different police organizations, prosecutors , and sheriffs opposing the crime bill. Tell the above people and your Representatives that if law enforcement doesn't even want the crime bill then neither should they here's a list of law-enforcement opposing the bill: American Federation of Police Boston Police Patrolman's Assn.
