This means that House Republicans, combined with some of the disgruntled members in the Black Caucus (who are upset over the racial quotas being removed from the bill), could join with conservative Democrats to stop the crime bill from going to the floor for a vote. The plea from Congressional offices to GOA is to put the heat on "pro-gun" (and fiscally conservative) Democrats. Here are a list of Democrats who, if they receive enough heat from you, could possibly vote against the crime bill because of the gun ban: Browder-AL Hayes-LA Neal-NC Geren-TX Bevill-AL Stupak-MI Rose-NC Sarpalius-TX Cramer-AL Barcia-MI Hefner-NC Laughlin-TX Hilliard-AL Carr-MI Strickland-OH de la Garza-TX Thornton-AR Ford-MI Applegate-OH Coleman-TX Condit-CA Dingell-MI Brewster-OK Stenholm-TX Hutto-FL Penny-MN McCurdy-OK Frost-TX Peterson-FL Peterson-MN DeFazio-OR Andrews-TX Thurman-FL Oberstar-MN Kopetski-OR Ortiz-TX Darden-GA Whitten-MS Klink-PA Tejeda-TX Rowland-GA Montgomery-MS Holden-PA Green-TX Deal-GA Parker-MS Kanjorski-PA Orton-UT LaRocco-ID Taylor-MS Murtha-PA Picket-VA Costello-IL Skelton-MO Murphy-PA Sisisky-VA Poshard-IL Danner-MO Johnson-SD Payne-VA Sharp-IN Volkmer-MO Lloyd-TN Boucher-VA Roemer-IN Williams-MT Cooper-TN Unsoeld-WA McCloskey-IN Bilbray-NV Clement-TN Foley-WA Hamilton-IN Swett-NH Gordon-TN Mollohan-WV Jacobs-IN Pallone-NJ Tanner-TN Wise-WV Smith-IA Richardson-NM Chapman-TX Rahall-WV Slattery-KS Hinchey-NY Wilson-TX Barca-WI Barlow-KY Valentine-NC Hall-TX Obey-WI Tauzin-LA Lancaster-NC Brooks-TX All of the above Congressmen can be reached at 202-225-3121. ACTION ITEMS: * If your legislator is listed above, hound him for the next several days. Get others in your district to call as well. Tell them that the gun ban (which covers more than 180 guns according to the BATF) is enough reason to oppose the crime bill. Exchanging a gun ban for a bill that punishes less than 10% of the criminals in this country is not a fair exchange. * EVERYONE: If you have already called your Congressman recently to oppose the crime bill/gun ban, call again with a different point of attack. You can emphasize that the price tag on this bill is reason enough to oppose it. (Some have suggested that the crime bill is Clinton's "stimulus package" in drag.) The bill will cost the country $30 billion -- $8 billion of which fall into the category of social-engineering experiments: midnight basketball, "self-esteem" classes, arts and crafts projects, etc. * EVERYONE: Encourage your "non-gunnie" friends to call their legislators and use these monetary objections listed above to oppose the crime bill. Have them ask their Congressman and Senators, "Why, if we are broke as a nation, are we going to pay billions of dollars on unproven social-engineering experiments -- like midnight basketball, 'self-esteem' classes, etc.?" We need to get others calling and expand our base of criticism against the bill. * Don't give up on Sen. Dole: Apparently, Dole's Senate office was not answering their phones on Friday. So here's another number (which goes directly to his Minority Leader's office in the Capitol Building); the number is listed at 202-224-3135. Press him to filibuster the crime bill.
