If you have one, I hope you're working on it. Spoke briefly yesterday with Dad about the recall. As the guys working on the recall know, much to their chagrin, NRA decided to stay out of it at the start. But Roberti and now HCI keep claiming that NRA is behind it all, they decided they might as well jump in to counter the nationwide fundraiser sent out by HCI. NRA is now running the "Laughing Crook" on L.A. television and might be helping in other ways. Dad says he must have overestimated the politicos in California. Amazingly, nobody is running and grabbing this chance to get some quick seniority for the race for the full term. The district is 60% Democratic. The Democratic power structure kept their boys out of the race. The only Democrat who qualified was Bill Dominguez, the head of the recall committee! All of the candidates running are at least acceptible. One, Randy Linkmeyer (phonetic spelling) is a gun dealer. Dolores White is a Republican candidate. Al Dib, a former Democrat (don't know what he's running as), was narrowly defeated in the City Supervisor race. One of these three candidates is likely to win. Support for the candidates is spread among several groups. The overriding interest for gun owners is to get someone other than David Roberti. As the chain mail flyer says, Roberti is talking guns because he is surrounded by scandal. Two weeks ago an affadavit was unsealed by a former state senator Robbins. In this affadavit, Robbins details how he and Roberti schemed to get more contributios from the insurance industry when Roberti appointed him chair of the Senate Insurance Committee. In another scandal, there is a David Roberti school which is funded with state money. The school is and has been under ongoing investigation for misuse of public funds. Among other things, it had a janitor who made $100,000 per year. A recent LA Times report said that gun owners had made their point simply by forcing the recall. They report that House Speaker Willie Brown says that the "chilling effect" is evident in the fact that there will be no gun legislation this year. NPR rushed to Roberti's aid this morning with a "Morning Edition" report that mentioned the hardship this special election will cause to a state that is already financially strapped. They failed to mention in their report that an election was already scheduled for that day. The extra cost is trivial. The NPR report also cited a Times-Mirror poll that shows Roberti winning by a two to one margin. I've been told the poll was skewed with leading questions, particularly regarding banning "assault weapons." We probably shouldn't complain about that too much. It could breed over-confidence among Roberti supporters and serve to motivate our folks. Conspicuous in its silence during all this hooplah is the Republican establishment. Republican poohbahs are reportedly as nervous about a successful recall as their counterparts on the Democratic side. The establishment simply doesn't like it when the people get uppity. And this is about as fine an example of uppitiness as you'll find. Get your chain letter in the mail! Best, Chris -- And the rifle? Wouldn't go out naked of a rifle.
