Senator Craig, Thank you for speaking out for the Second Amendment on the Senate floor June 6, 2000. You are exactly right that it recognizes and protects safe and effective self-defense, and that self-defense is the most fundamental human right. Without physical security none of the other rights are possible. Even more important we have a responsiblity to provide for our own defense. The police are a great backup but per Warren v. District of Columbia they have no duty to protect particular individuals, nor could they. The greatest danger we face is the mindset that someone else is responsible for our problems. This is the mentality of a serf and unfortunately it seems to be growing. Freedom means responsibility, and diminishing either ultimately leads to distopia. I sincerely wish more Senators would put the Constitution first, as they should. There are many other interests but sticking to the Constitution is the reason we have a government and vice versa. Similarly, the Bill of Rights is the real "contract with America" since it was a major condition of Constitutional ratification. If the government breaks that contract, then it ceases legitimate power. Thanks again for doing the right thing, Jeff Chan
