Jan Goodwin's "Peace on Earth Campaign" article contains numerous factual errors and also promotes attitudes that encourage crime victimization. This kind of inaccurate, biased journalism is a gross disservice to your readers. There are almost too many errors to list, but here are some obvious ones: Goodwin claims AK-47 assault rifles used by military and insurgent groups are available from American web sites. This is wrong. AK-type rifles in America are semi-automatic which means one shot per trigger pull like most other guns. True AK assault rifles are fully-automatic machine guns which fire repeatedly while the trigger is pressed. These are essentially unavailable except to police and military in America. A similar deliberate lie is made in describing "200 automatic weapons" purchased at gun shows. The article gives the impression that criminals buy guns from legitimate dealers and at gun shows. Research for the U.S. Department of Justice's National Institute of Justice by James Wright surveyed felons in prison and found that 93% get their guns illegally and not from stores or gun shows. This is another deliberate deception in the form of a false and misleading premise. Since criminals do not get their guns through legitimate channels, background checks, trigger locks, waiting periods, registration, testing, and licensing have little effect on them. Their main effect is to place obstacles in the way of the 100 lb woman seeking proven, safe and effective self-defense against the 250 lb abusive ex-spouse, rapist, robber or murderer. By promoting an attitude of irresponsible defenselessness, Marie Claire may be contributing to the harm of countless women and their families. I hope you will consider these issues when choosing your editorial content and stop publishing dangerous deceptions such as this one.
