This guide provides pointers you can implement locally. I hope this will also be used by sites developing free custom news services; journalists and other writers doing background research; and historians needing previous news items. Dedication: to Scoop Nisker - legendary San Francisco reporter - who says " IF YOU DON'T LIKE THE NEWS, GO OUT AND MAKE YOUR OWN " 888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888 USING THIS GUIDE This guide is designed to encourage local sites to create their own news services. Hopefully such sites will add local news and the whole package will be made available on the Internet. All the primary sources listed here provide significant news on a daily basis - without charge. Some have archives which are invaluable to researchers. In addition, information is included to let you respond to traditional news sources in the spirit of network interactivity. This includes info on Internet accessible : Newspapers - U.S. and Foreign TV & RADIO stations Press Services and Media Networks Publications interested in announcements of new internet based news sources. Finally, I have also included directions for locating the providers of all newspapers that are available in electronic form from a fee based DAILY NEWS source. Internet access to e-text versions of nearly 200 US & foreign daily newspapers is available from commercial sources. If you decide to build your own news service, remember that the internet is a perfect resource from which to build specialty sections. You can easily obtain sports events lists, recipes, nutrition tips, book and film reviews, and most of the other types of items used to broaden the appeal of printed newspapers. You can also deliver hypertext and multimedia versions which really explore the power of this medium. See the entry for aspiring journalists below! 888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888 The main LISTINGS include the following sections: -------------------------------------------------- News Source: Organization(s) providing the news. These can be used to complete the research done online using sources that only provide abstracts; or to provide a more local perspective on a story. There are currently 109 US newspapers available fulltext online from DataTimes, DIALOG, and NEXIS (Mead Data Central). Newspapers are included if they are general-interest (i.e., not focused specifically on a single topic, e.g., business, legal affairs, etc.) and if most of the articles from the printed paper are online. Fulltext online does not, however, mean cover-to-cover inclusion. Wire stories and op-eds/syndicated columns are two major types of items that may not be included in online files. Inclusion vary by paper. Other exclusions generally comprise financial tables (e.g., stock listings, exchange rates, etc.), sports statistics, weather forecasts, graphics and photos, advertisements, TV-radio- movie listings, and fillers and other minor items. The papers are listed in order by state. File names are given for each newspaper and state group file names are also given. A growing number of non-US newspapers are available fulltext online. The online versions are in English unless otherwise noted.
