Subject: Free news sources on the Internet

Part 1 - This document will soon be available live from the NSTN cybermall
with all links available from their information kiosks service at one location

title: DAILY NEWS - FREE INTERNET SOURCES
& information about the daily news media globally
version: One
update frequency: Irregular
date: May 16, 1994
author/contact name: Sam Sternberg
author/contact e-mail address: samsam@vm1.yorku.ca
descriptive keywords: News, daily, free, national, international,
radio, TV, newspaper, print, archives, index, abstract, full text,
broadcast schedules, business, wire service, online.

intended audience: Everyone, but especially e-site operators.
This guide provides pointers you can implement locally. I hope this
will also be used by sites developing free custom news services;
journalists and other writers doing background research; and
historians needing previous news items.

Dedication: to Scoop Nisker - legendary San Francisco reporter -
who says " IF YOU DON'T LIKE THE NEWS, GO OUT AND MAKE YOUR OWN "

               USING THIS GUIDE

This guide is designed to encourage local sites to create their
own news services. Hopefully such sites will add local news and
the whole package will be made available on the Internet.
All the primary sources listed here provide significant news on a
daily basis - without charge. Some have archives which are
invaluable to researchers. In addition, information is included to
let you respond to traditional news sources in the spirit of
network interactivity.
This includes info on Internet accessible :
          Newspapers - U.S. and Foreign
          TV & RADIO stations
          Press Services and Media Networks
Publications interested in announcements of new internet
               based news sources.
Finally, I have also included directions for locating the providers
of all newspapers that are available in electronic form from a fee
based DAILY NEWS source. Internet access to e-text versions of
nearly 200 US & foreign daily newspapers is available from
commercial sources.

If you decide to build your own news service, remember that the
internet is a perfect resource from which to build specialty
sections. You can easily obtain sports events lists, recipes,
nutrition tips, book and film reviews, and most of the other types
of items used to broaden the appeal of printed newspapers. You can
also deliver hypertext and multimedia versions which really explore
the power of this medium. See the entry for aspiring journalists
below!

is mentioned - it is a gopher site. For access use
your local system's gopher client. Ask your system
               administrator for instructions.
Path: directions for descending the local information tree
until the NEWS area is reached. Each / is followed
by the name of the next choice to select as you
follow the path to the information.
Producer: Name of the organization responsible for preparing
this particular version of the material from the
               primary source listed above.
Indexed: indicates that the day's news is available as a
one line description of each original article.
These can be useful as very brief guides to the news
and as leads to stories worth finding from other
               more detailed sources.

of each item. Some sites have searches that
only retrieve by item date. These are not indicated
               as searchable.

Content: Daily news scripts combine material from TV & radio
english language services. Largely foreign coverage
with domestic items, including some business news.
These extensive reports are evenhanded and usually
very well written. Despite funding and production
by an US government agency - they are less biased
by american perspectives than most material from US
commercial media. This is an excellent source of
full text material on important international news.

Producer: Compiled by Betsy Reifsnyder, Congressional
          Reference Division, Congressional Research Service
Content: The two guides provide lists of all full text
sources for traditional print journals. These can be used to
complete the research done online using sources that only provide
abstracts; or to provide a more local perspective on a story.

There are currently 109 US newspapers available fulltext online
from DataTimes, DIALOG, and NEXIS (Mead Data Central). Newspapers
are included if they are general-interest (i.e., not focused
specifically on a single topic, e.g., business, legal affairs,
etc.) and if most of the articles from the printed paper are
online. Fulltext online does not, however, mean cover-to-cover
inclusion.
Wire stories and op-eds/syndicated columns are two major types of
items that may not be included in online files. Inclusion vary
by paper. Other exclusions generally comprise financial tables
(e.g., stock listings, exchange rates, etc.), sports statistics,
weather forecasts, graphics and photos, advertisements, TV-radio-
movie listings, and fillers and other minor items.
The papers are listed in order by state. File names are given for
each newspaper and state group file names are also given.

A growing number of non-US newspapers are available fulltext
online. The online versions are in English unless otherwise noted.
For more information about these newspapers, contact
the database vendors at the following telephone numbers:
