As you know, Senator David Roberti lost his bid for the Democratic nomination for State Treasurer. He is quoted by the L.A. Times as saying "when the gun lobby goes after you, it does have an adverse impact." We accept his analysis. The following anti-gun bills are still being considered. In brackets is the bill's current status. AB 1333 (Gotch) - Would prohibit law enforcement from selling or trading seized firearms [Senate Floor]. AB 1818 (Gotch - Would require a loaded chamber indicator on semi-automatic firearms made in California [Senate Judiciary]. AB 2469 (Burton) - Would increase the penalty under specific circumstances for illegal carry of a concealed weapon [Senate Floor]. AB 3410 (T. Friedman) - Would require that DOJ license firearm dealers [Senate Rules]. AB X23 (Eastin) - Would require that seized firearms be destroyed and restrict a minor's use of a handgun [Assembly Ways & Means]. AB X24 (Eastin) - Would impose a $50 fee on all firearms you own or purchase and a $0.15 fee on every cartridge purchased [Assembly Public Safety]. AB X37 (W. Brown, Burton) - Would repeal state preemption [Assembly Floor] AB X120 (Speier - Would allocate $25,000,000 from the State general fund for a firearm buy back program [Assembly Public Safety] AB X121 (Speier) - Would put the above issue on the November ballot as an initiative [Assembly Public Safety] SB X37 (Roberti) - Would prohibit people in prohibited classes from possessing magazines and establish a penalty enhancement for people in prohibited classes who possess a high capacity (undefined) magazine [Senate Appropriations] SB X46 (Roberti) - Would expand the Roberti-Roos assault weapon list via the "Feinstein" generic description [Senate Floor] SB 822 (Hayden) - Would require the destruction of seized weapons [Assembly Public Safety] SB 1128 (Roberti) - High capacity magazine ban [Assembly Floor] There are also a number of bills which we have some concern about. The authors are working with us and our concerns may be resolved. They are: AB 2470 (Rainey) - A "kids and guns" bill with a requirement that inter family transfers of handguns must be reported to the DOJ. SB X36 (Presley) - A complicated "kids and guns" bill. Two bills, SB 1277 (Hart) and SB 1278 (Hart), were resurrected in the Senate today. They were granted a rule waiver and will have one final vote. SB 1277 would prohibit your from buying more than one handgun every 30 days and SB 1278 would prohibit you from possessing firearms if you are the subject of a restraining order. Please let your Senator know that you oppose these bills. We are unsure what Senator Roberti intends to do with his remaining anti-gun bills. His consultant has informed us that Roberti intends to aggressively pursue all of them. Our immediate attention should be focused on SB X46. The vote was 19 YES, 17 NO, and 4 NOT VOTING. PRO SPORTSMEN'S BILLS AB 3835 (Knowles) - Would repeal Proposition 117; California Wildlife Protection Act of 1990, which banned the hunting of mountain lions [Senate Water, Parks and Wildlife] SB 2013 (Leslie) - Would amend Proposition 117 and direct the Department of Fish and Game to manage the mountain lion population and make it easier for the legislature to redirect the $30,000,000 per year which is used to purchase habitat, to other projects [Senate Natural Resources and Wildlife]. Please contact the below listed Senators and urge them to vote "Aye" on SB 2013 (All phone numbers are in the "916" area code.}: Thompson 445-3375 McCorquodale 445-3104 Mello 445-5843 Killea 445-3952 We are attempting not to turn this into a hunting versus anti-hunting debate. The issue is responsible management of both funds and mountain lions. With respect to the lions, it is also a major public safety issue. Therefore, it is asked that you identify yourself as a concerned citizen, NOT as a sportsman. ====================================================================== -- ************************************************************ * Ron Phillips crphilli@ingr.com * * Senior Customer Application Engineer * * Intergraph Electronics * * 381 East Evelyn Avenue VOICE: (415) 691-6473 * * Mountain View, CA 94041 FAX: (415) 691-0350 * ************************************************************
