News and comment: Ginny Simone: As a direct result of the Ruby Ridge hearings, the Justice department unveiled a new federal deadly force policy Assistant AG Goerlick at today's Ruby Ridge hearing - the new uniform deadly force policy which is -- "only when the officer has a reasonable belief that the subject of such force poses an imminent danger of death or serious physical injury to the officer or another person - deadly force may not be used if an alternative reasonably appears to be sufficient to accomplish the law enforcement purpose." The new policy means that no federal agency will be able to change the policy. Larry Potts was also testifying before the Senate committee where he told senators that any changes that were made to the then existing policy were unauthorized and if changes were made it was done by agents in the field. Simone: The list gets longer ... Ohio is fighting hard for the right to carry. But the Governor will veto the bill; the Governor says the supporters have not shown that they need this bill.[ as always look who decides for you whether you can defend yourself or die] [video segments of citizens telling their story ... women who talked about being powerless when attacked, not once but twice. Women fighting a system that won't allow citizens to defend themselves. They talked about 87% of the crime occurring outside of the home...but the government won't allow the citizens to carry a weapon. Many compelling arguments to allow the citizen to choose.] House debate -- some excerpts: Ohio is one of only 8 states which DENY citizens the right to carry a firearm. Testimony of people who carry guns in spite of the law against it. The debate against centers around the argument that the state will return to the wild west days. Florida's director of licensing stated flatly that has not happen, but what has happened is violent crime has gone DOWN. Testimony showed that the incidence of citizens using right to carry permits as a vehicle of crime is just not a concern. The incidence of licensed citizens committing crimes is virtually non-existent. Bill has cleared the Senate, House debate continues. The bill's fate is still unknown. [ Obviously citizens in Ohio need to get involved ... now] Simone: Joining me now is Tanya Metaksa and from Ohio -- State Senator Joe Vukovich and retired police officer Lance Biddle. Simone: Senator, what do you think about the testimony versus the governor's veto threat ... from the testimony, the citizens seem to have a case. Ohio Sen. Joe Vukovich: I believe the testimony bears this out. There is no reason for the state to restrict citizens from legally carrying weapons if they choose to do so. Metaksa: The governor says he doesn't have enough information to support the bill. Many of the citizens and the legislature are providing him with all he will need. Simone: Senator, you said you have information the governor's support was changed for political reasons. Ohio Sen. Joe Vukovich: The FOP sent a letter to the governor that the FOP would support the governor with funds to run for the US Senate if he would not support the right to carry bill. We have copies of the letter. Simone: Is there any indication of this change of position before the FOP letter? Sen. Vukovich: The governor's office has refused to meet with me on this issue. We are pursuing it because it does not appear to be proper. [can you say vote buying?] Simone: Tell us about the FOP, who are they? Lance Biddle, former policeman: The FOP is the bargaining agent for police officers so you have to understand why officers won't speak up against the FOP. The majority of the police officers I spoke to are for the right to carry. The FOP in general has become increasingly anti-gun but they don't ask their membership what they think. As far as I know they have never done a membership polling on the issue. Simone: You say they FOP doesn't ask their members how they feel, yet they stand up and say their members support it...how does this appear to the FOP membership? Biddle: It just doesn't square with the membership of the FOP. As a retired officer I have the same rights as any other citizen, I can't carry a firearm. Somehow I went from a trusted person allowed to carry a firearm to a not trustworthy person when I retired. Metaksa: What is interesting to me is the number of police officers who feel after retiring from active duty - they feel like second class citizens since they cannot carry a firearm once off the force. Simone: Senator, why did you sponsor the bill? Vukovich: The whole process has been really enlightening. I have never been associated with a bill where the press is so pre-disposed of their position even before the facts -- or in spite of the facts -- are presented. I simply became convinced that this is one of the few ways that a citizen can protect himself. I refuse to acknowledge that any governor has the right to tell a citizen that their only recourse is to be a victim. I am not a NRA member and have not associated myself with the NRA or the pro-gun lobby. But, there is nothing any police force, or any government can do to protect its citizens everywhere all the time. I sponsored the bill so citizens can choose whether to defend themselves or not. [Could this be the whole issue in a nutshell ... once the people determine the nanny state can't do it all, the nanny state is exposed for the fraud it is? Think about it ... isn't this the foundation all these big government issues are built on? A politician's stand on gun control issues says more about the politician's real view of the citizen than any other issue.] Simone: What I find so interesting is the opponents always make it sound like the wild west will take over. It hasn't happened and doesn't happen. Vukovich: I have had many citizens call me and tell me that they are carrying now and want the state to recognize the fact that citizens are entitled to the right to carry. I defy any of the opponents to show me data that says responsible citizens cause a problem when allowed to carry. They offer some mindless argument like 'guns are bad' so we can't allow more guns on the street ... what ever that all means. Metaksa: What do you think of criminals ... do they rush out and get carry permits? Biddle: Certainly not. The criminals already have guns. What the law will do is to put the criminals on notice that the next time they attack a citizens the citizen may fight back. Criminals are predators. One of the reason cops are NOT involved in violent crime is the criminals chooses defenseless victims in 98% of the cases. It is less than 2% of the time that a policeman is actually involved in the crime while it is taking place. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- PHONE CALLS FROM VIEWERS SEGMENT... Caller:...Does the legislature have the votes to over ride a veto? Answer:...Vukovich: The Senate vote was 26:6 so if the house follows the Senate the votes are there ... but a governor can do things to stop a over ride, sometimes he can twist arms and the votes change to his favor. Caller:...I read that in PA there is a new law that if you transfer a gun you need to register the gun. I heard the NRA supported this restriction. Answer:...Metaksa: What you read is not true...the PA law that was passed made it easier to transfer guns between family members. What you read is incorrect. Vukovich: What opened my eyes was the NRA members that were contacting me were doctors, businessmen, members of the community. The press response was not as meritorious. They consistently took the emotional knee jerk side of the argument. I don't have a clue why this is. [ call you Ohio rep now !!!] Simone: It is amazing how the politics gets into the argument. The anti-gun crowd seems to always want to make it a gun control issue, when it is a persons right to choose to defend themselves by the best means available. Vukovich: I was on a talk show and a woman called ... she was run off the road by three men in a truck. She crawled out of her car and luckily had a unregistered firearm with her. She pulled the gun and chased off the would be criminals -- the three men had baseball bats with them as they approached her crashed car. This woman asked the anti-carry person what they would have her do differently -- There was no response. [I would assume the politically correct answer anti-carry would not have been apropos - but what is the answer?] Simone: If you could tell the governor one thing ... Biddle: Governor, we don't have enough money to hire all the officers required to protect every citizen, when the crime is committed we need to recognize that the cops don't get there until the victim is a victim. The citizen is the only one on the scene at the time of the crime. Simone: It is a fact that armed citizens behave responsibly. Biddle: The armed citizen is usually more careful about using a firearm than any other person. The responsibility of carrying a firearm is awesome and the average citizen who gets a permit can be trusted with that responsibility. Simone: In talking with the Senator and ex-policeman from Ohio you could see the support is a grass roots effort. The people are driving the push for the right to carry reforms. Caller:...In Texas you may have noticed that we had to veto our governor before we got the right to carry. I took the class and they emphasis the responsibility aspects of carrying a firearm. Answer:...Metaksa: The courses are very informative and give the citizen the tools they need to be responsible permit holders. Anyone who is going to carry a firearm must get the proper training and learn the laws regarding the use of deadly force. Caller:...I have a Florida permit and my wife got her permit today. In Florida we have the Florida police auxiliary which is also a good idea. Answer:... Simone: When the Justice Department announced the new uniform policy of deadly force yesterday-- I ask what took so long? Why are all these agencies operating under different rules? Isn't there any one single source for how to conduct federal law enforcement? Metaksa: One of the problems with the new rules is the 'imminent' danger they specify verses 'immediate' danger. There is a big difference and Sen. Spector made a point of this. Director Freeh is to testify tomorrow and I expect there will be some follow-up on this point. End show ... Tanya is a great spokesperson for the NRA and is clearly learning from her experiences and continually improving and refining the arguments. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bill .... bglover@netcom.com ======================================================================= Being a citizen is a full-time job. If we wish to reclaim our rights, we first must begin by reclaiming our responsibilities. There can be no individual right without individual taking responsibility. More news and comments: Ruby Ridge hearings: The hearings resumed this week with Denver FBI swat team members testifying on Tuesday ... they called the rules of engagement nuts, among other things, and on Wednesday Larry Potts testifying again followed by the Assist. AG Goerlick. On Thursday FBI director Freeh is to testify followed at some unspecified date by testimony by AG Reno. Potts denies knowing what his minions were doing, just the guy for the number two slot, and produced a paper that showed he knew nothing of the 'shoot to kill' orders. Strangely, no one else had seen the new document before just recently, including the Justice investigating team ... convenient. Goerlick introduced the new rules on the use of deadly force after slamming Potts' performance then trying to retract her statements when it was brought up that she had been in the approval loop for his promotion to second in charge...ooops. Who's on first -- anyone? As the ever changing story of Ruby Ridge just keeps on rolling along, two things come out loud and clear - three people died unnecessarily and no one in the federal government seems inclined to take responsibility. Wouldn't it be really really nice if someone in the chain of command would just step forward and say 'I am responsible, it was a mistake but I am responsible'. Probably not going to happen in our life times - we all know the government never makes mistakes. As more and more laws that criminalizes benign behavior that harms no one gets added to our staggering array of laws that no one can even comprehend, much less obey - look for more and more senseless Ruby Ridge incidents to occur. This whole incident was over a 3 dollar file and sawing off a piece of metal too short according to government's increasingly arbitrary dictate. -------------------------------- Network TV tripe and propaganda --- award of the month: The 10/7 ABC show, US Marshal. The story line was the indiscriminate senseless shooting of ... yes you guessed it ... a US Marshal on a fishing trip ... yes you guessed it ... by a young boy. Oh ... the best line ... you guessed it again ... "this is militia country - we got to be careful". Now if they would state it is propaganda, rather than package it as entertainment, then I could ignore it. But this is outright contrived PROPAGANDA served up as entertainment aimed at demonizing a segment of society that doesn't support the ABC anti-gun agenda. Any similarity to the Weaver incident was merely by intentional design. Clearly the script writers for the ABC show 'US Marshal' are a bunch of has been liberal Democrats. You wonder what the ABC network will do to get Democrats back in charge. Answer - anything it takes. A good show to skip. -------------------------------- I note with amusement that CBS is in dire financial straits. Seems that no one watches their shows anymore. CBS is the network that ran the machine guns firing with voice over saying that these were the guns being banned in the Clinton gun ban. Even after repeatedly calling the stations I was told they 'knew it' but the guns being banned were similar so it was OK...sure. Our local fish wrapper the Murky Snooze is laying off 50 more people and terminating their afternoon edition. Too bad. But, who reads it anyway? The Mercury news is as anti-gun, anti-NRA as it gets. This follows a shut down of the SF afternoon daily. The same gun grabbers which run the SJ-CA Mercury News are available on-line with America On Line ... they go under the heading 'Mercury'. Every time you use this service the Mercury News gets to use the money to take your rights away. Do you know who it is you are supporting? Computer on-line services are going gang busters with a >2x increase in subscribers in one year. Vote with your dollars. -------------------------------- Gun shows: In CA several attempts are being made to ban gun shows. There is no evidence whatsoever that gun shows cause any crime, but with liberals, who needs facts. Better keep a sharp eye out for this in your areas. The San Mateo County Board of Supervisors will be discussing the ban on gun shows on Oct. 24, 1995. This may be our last chance at saving the San Mateo County fairgrounds gun shows. -------------------------------- What's all the fuss over the balanced budget: Total public debt outstanding as of close of business Tuesday September 26, 1995: $4,953,251,000,000 When President Clinton Took Office The Debt Was: $4,187,807,000,000 So far Clinton has run up the debt $ 765,444,000,000 Divide the debt by 250 million to get your fair share of liberalism. -------------------------------- The antis are still out there, the CA Police Chiefs Association is one of these groups. Here's a sampling of the "first steps" to the CPCA's new "social environment": * CONFISCATION of all semi-automatic firearms covered under the CA Roberti-Roos Act of 1990, PLUS AN UNSPECIFIED NUMBER of other "non-sporting" firearms; --Ever wonder where registration leads? * Mandatory registration of all firearms, including all those currently owned; --See above paragraph to see what the next step is. * Adopt arbitrary firearm design safety standards. Unless able to meet these standards, firearms manufactured prior to adoption of these standards would be grandfathered for ten years, then they will be SUBJECT TO CONFISCATION; * State licensing of anyone seeking to buy or own firearms or ammunition, including a costly mandatory state-sponsored training; * Banning magazines with a capacity higher than SIX rounds; * Require all privately owned firearms to be stored unloaded in a locked box at all times * Require that all firearms found in violation of any of these provisions be permanently surrendered to law-enforcement or destroyed. The League of California Cities (LCC) Board of Directors has now "adopted and endorsed" the position of the California Police Chiefs Association (CPCA) in favor of gun control. The LCC is circulating a CPCA report titled "Confronting the American Tragedy: The Need to Better Regulate Firearms" to all mayors and city managers in California. If you think that sounds like Sarah Brady's and David Roberti's wish list, YOU'RE RIGHT! This anti-gun agenda could develop into the most serious assault ever launched on your right to keep and bear arms. In fact, it's designed as an outline for a legislative package that the CPCA would like to see enacted by the California State Legislature ... and then used as a blue print for a nationwide plan. Get involved, or bend over, 'cause here it comes. The San Jose City Council voted and passed today (10-17-95) to adopt the full 29 point agenda of the League of California Cities, a part of which is support for the position paper by the California Police Chiefs Association. This is totalitarian gun control ... period. This was a surprise event as no mention of any of this has been heard of before 10-18-95. We had no warning this was to be on the agenda. You might want to consider that this was sponsored by Democrats, voted for by Democrats. --Want to know what is wrong in the country ... Democrats. So folks ... even when you organize, the Democrats sneak it through in the 'middle of the night'. So much for Democracy and openness. You might want to consider what Democrats think of your rights when you vote in '96. =======================================================================
