The Senators opposed to the "Crime Stimulus" Bill in the Senate will be making a "point of order", which if Gore (or whoever is in the chair) isn't totally stupid, will be ruled on favorably. The "point of order" has something to do with the trust fund - I didn't catch the full description. If the chair rules unfavorably, they can appeal the ruling of the chair, in which case we need 51 votes to change his mind. That appeal will probably fail. Either way, if the PoO is sustained, amendments can be offered, and several Senators have amendments that will effectively filibuster it. If the PoO is NOT sustained, then a talking filibuster is required, and the bad guys need 60 votes to shut it down to get a vote. The nose counters haven't come up with 41 votes yet. We want the Senators who have not directly expressed a position but who may be inclined to support us to feel the heat, ahh, hear from America. They are: Baucus Bingamin Boren Breaux Brown Bryan Byrd Campbell Coats Cohen Conrad Danforth Dorgan Durenburger Exon (sp?) Ford Gregg (on record to vote against the bill, but we need him on the PoO) Hatfield (anti-Death penalty) Heflin (wants to support Clinton) Hollings Jeffords Johnson Kassenbaum Lehey Lugar Mitchell Nunn Packwood And, of course, the usual Dole + your 2 senators. The message is: help to sustain the Point of Order, sustain the filibuster, and vote against the bill should it come to a vote. A special mention goes to Arlen Spector. He just squished out saying how wonderful the crime bill is, and that he will vote for it. We need to shut down his office phone for a couple of days. Senator Spector has been heard in New Hampshire recently, so he could have Presidential aspirations. This makes him a special focus. Call him and tell him that we don't appreciate what he has done. I went looking for the numbers for these guys, but I left my book at home. They were just posted recently, and I apologise for not cross referencing the list above. I felt it more important to get the word out ASAP.
