Your phones calls have gotten their attention, but Gingrich still needs some heat by Gun Owners of America (August 19, 1994) -- YOU GUYS ARE BLOWING THEM AWAY! The office of Rep. Newt Gingrich says they received 1,000 calls on Wednesday -- or about 200 per hour during the afternoon. Similarly, Rep. Bill McCollum's office called GOA, asking us to "call off the dogs" because they couldn't get any work done -- you guys were literally avalanching them with calls. Good work! Haley Barbour's office was also busy answering phone calls; they told GOA, "Don't worry. We're getting your message." Of course, we are still worried, because they have apparently not delivered the message to Gingrich. Here's what press reports quote Gingrich as saying: "The biggest areas of disagreement, according to Gingrich, are: cost of the program; federal control versus local control of several programs; weakened punishment provisions for felons who commit crimes with a gun; and the Democrats' objection to a sexual predator notification provision which would alert victims when convicted sexual predators are released from jail or move into a neighborhood." (Source: Legi-Slate Report, Aug. 18, 1994, an online legislative news service.) Notice anything missing?! He is still not demanding that the gun ban be dropped. Folks, if we gave him 1,000 calls on Wednesday, we need to give him 1,000 more today. ACTION ITEMS: 1) Call Rep. Newt Gingrich again and tell him we DON'T need this crime bill -- especially not one with a gun ban. Tell him that if he doesn't think it's important to tell Democrats to drop the gun ban, then he must not think it's important for Republicans to be the majority party in the House next year. (He may tell you that he can't force the gun issue because some Republicans want the gun ban in the bill. Well, Clinton has the opposite problem -- many Democrats want the ban OUT of the bill -- and that doesn't stop Clinton from demanding the ban stay in. Gingrich needs to fight from principle -- we don't need a crime bill that sacrifices our rights!) Call Gingrich at 202-225-4501 AND fax him at 5-4656. The phone number in his Minority Whip's office is 202-225-0197. You can get his campaign office at 404-565-6398; fax 5-6824. 2) Call Haley Barbour, the RNC chairman, and give him the same message. Tell him you are opposed to gun control and will not support any Republican who votes for gun control -- even as part of a so-called crime bill. Moreover, you will not contribute to the RNC as long as they continue to support Republicans who vote for gun control. You could mention that you strongly support the Republican Party of Alaska's resolution to deny RNC money to any Republican who votes for gun control. You can reach Barbour at 202-863-8700; fax: 863-8774. 3) If you have a Republican Congressman, call him and tell him we don't want this crime bill -- with or without the gun ban. Have them tell Gingrich to stop negotiating! Call the Capitol toll free at 1-800-768-2221. 4) Call your state's Republican Party Chairman. Urge them to call Haley Barbour, Newt Gingrich, Bob Dole and Republican Congressmen in their own state to oppose this so-called crime bill. Tell him you want to see a copy of a letter from him to Haley Barbour opposing a Republican sellout of gun owners. Each state has a Republican party chairman. These people are the ones who elected RNC Chairman Haley Barbour. Below is a partial listing. FURTHER TALKING POINTS: Remind the Republican hierarchy that passing the crime bill opens the door to pass the "Health Scare" bill. Tell them that compromise with Clinton is unacceptable -- it only helps Clinton. A vote for the crime bill is a vote for Clinton. Not all police support this bill -- GOA's August 17th alert has a list of police groups opposed. And USA Today (8/18/94) reports that Clinton's approval rating is 39%. Ask them, "Do you really want to save his presidency?"
