At the same time, it's very disappointing to see that the newspaper doesn't have the integrity and courage to point out specifically where the gun control proposal is flawed; such as after eighteen years of national ammunition registration (required by the Gun Control Act of 1968) the BATF stated that the registration "had no substantial law enforcement value" and convinced Congress to repeal the requirement in 1986. Yes, further study of the Handgun Control Inc. sponsored package of politically-correct, sound-good/feel-good, do very little (if anything) constructive package of gun control measures is well in order. Furthermore, it should be noted by all that HCI is lobbying this very same package to every city council in CA (and probably nationwide), hoping to find council member in each city to propose it as a local ordinance. And while this hastily assembled grab-bag of gun control measures is being studied, should not the Mercury News do a study on how to make its reporting and editorializing far more objective?
