I had a recent e-chat with Richard Rider (Libertarian candidate for
Governor of California), and I asked him about the rumor I heard about
his endorsement of Ron Unz. I know this is old news now, but for the
record he asked me to post his statement:

 ====================================================================

You asked for the story on my endorsement of Ron Unz. The news is old, but
post if for me if you will.

I did indeed endorse Ron Unz for Governor. I felt that he would be a
terrific governor, and I would have run a much more passive campaign if he
had won the nomination. However, I never said that I would drop out of the
race. In fact, under California law, I could not remove my name from the
ballot even if I wanted to.
I have been presenting myself as "Plan B." Since Ron Unz did not win, I am
now the alternative to Pete Wilson, at least among the limited government
faction of the Republican Party. I am now running a FULLTIME campaign for
governor, something we have never done before in this state.
Unz did not endorse me directly. He is staying active within the Republican
Party. But read carefully his concession statement:
"I will be urging all my supporters to go to the polls in November to
vote for all those candidates who are true to the fundamental principles of
the Republican Party--lower taxes, fewer regulations and smaller government."

One can argue as to whether or not that endorsement describes me, but there
is no question that it does NOT describe Pete Wilson!
The endorsement did not sit well with some of the purists in my
party, and I can understand their concerns. But I felt it was the right
thing to do, and I would do it again given such a clear choice. Most
Libertarians seem to agree with my endorsement.
The Unz supporters are now my target market, and so far my
endorsement has been well received by them. Wish me luck (and send lots of
money!).
