Metaksa, Executive Director of NRA-ILA, U.S. Senator Bob Dole affirmed his commitment to the Second Amendment and the repeal of the 1994 Clinton gun ban. Specifically he stated, "Repealing the ill-conceived gun ban passed as part of President Clinton's crime bill last year is one of my legislative priorities. The Senate will debate this issue in the near future and I hope to have a bill on the President's desk by this summer." Apparently dismayed by this solidarity of opposition to the gun ban in Congress, the anti-gun press has attempted to paint Senator Dole and the NRA Membership as being at odds with the American people. In an editorial critical of Senator Dole's support for repeal, the New York Times suggests that "four-fifths of the American people and the police officers who protect them favor that ban." The Los Angeles Times "reporting" on Senator Dole's letter claimed "76% ... supported the ban." Members are urged to write or send e-mail to the following publications in order to set the record straight on public opposition to gun control and the basic fallacy of gun control as a method of crime control.
