The information that I got is from Saturday's (Mar. 17) Electronic San Jose Mercury News. The article may not be there anymore for those checking their mail after the weekend. Now that I have time to summarize it, here goes: Senator Diane Feinstein promised to fight back with "the mother of all filibusters" if Bob Dole works at dismantling the assault-weapons ban. DiFi helped put the ban on the books. Dole hopes to repeal the ban by this summer, and Clinton said he'll veto Dole's measure to repeal. DiFi knows that there are many loop holes in the law but she knows she is in the minority in the senate. This is one of the reasons why she isn't pusing for a stronger bill and don't think she can follow through with the promised filibuster. She believes that there is enough support to stop Dole's legistlation. DiFi will push forward amendments if the Republicans try to repeal the assault ban. One of the tougher amendments that she may propose is a plan endorsed by California Police Chief Association - It calls for a mandatory registration of firearms, destruction of firearms legally taken by police and limit magazines to six rounds. DiFi stated that she is concerned with how manufactuing companies are getting around legislation and called them greedy. She wants to wait and see what happens. By waiting, she can fix the problems before revising the law (I'm assuming the current ban). She also claims that 69% of Americans favor the ban and questions why the people should rescind the ban to the largest bullying lobby - the NRA. Dole responded that he is not suprised by her comments and the GOP wants to "focus on punishing criminals and not limiting the freedom of law-abiding Americans". Bob Walker, legislative director of HCI is not suprised by Dole and doesn't think that Dole's posistion will not help him with his presidential campign. Walker cited a poll from the University of New Hampshire that 3/4 of the voters in New Hampshire support the ban. Many of the supporters were Republicans and "they will vote in the Republican primary". Chip Walker (not Bob Walker), a spokesperson for the NRA is suprised that anyone is suprised of Dole's actions. After all , "80 percent of NRA-endoresed candidates won their elections on Nov. 8". The article also mentions that the repeal is part of a multi-bill GOP crime package and is expected to be brought to the House in May. More than a dozen House Demos. are joining the Reps. with this issue. That pretty much summarizes it. If anyone had read the article and find my summary confusing or out of context, feel free to clarify. The grammatic police can e-mail me directly. -- homeboy
